How to keep yourself healthy during this rainy season

It has been raining in the past few days and weeks, and as of this writing the Philippines is being hammered by Typhoon Pepito that brings more rain around the Metro and other parts of the country. And with the constant rain and we are already in the “BER” months that makes the weather colder, that makes some of us easily get sick.

Here are some tips to prevent getting sick during this cold weather:


  1. It is commonly harmless, common colds is a viral infection in the nose and throat.


    Symptoms

    • Stuffy or runny nose
    • Sore Throat
    • Cough
    • Congestion
    • Headaches or slight body aches
    • Sneezing

    Prevention

    • Wash hands
    • Use tissues
    • Eat healthy
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Take vitamins

  2. Flu or Influenza is also a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system – nose, throat and lungs.


    Symptoms

    • Fever
    • Muscle Aches
    • Chills and Sweats
    • Headaches
    • Dry cough
    • Sore throat
    • Stuffy nose
    • Tiredness and weakness

    Prevention

    • Avoid people who has flu infection
    • Disinfect items that flu infected person has touched
    • Keep yourself healthy
    • Eat fruits and vegetables
    • Drink vitamins
    • Drink lots of water
    • Get enough sleep

  3. It is a rough, itchy and irritated and most of the time painful feeling on the throat especially when swallowing, most commonly caused by a viral infection.


    Symptoms

    • Scratchy sensation in the throat
    • Difficulty in swallowing
    • Pain in the throat while swallowing
    • Hoarse or muffled voice
    • Swelling of tonsils with white patches and pus

    Prevention

    • Wash hands
    • Avoid contact with people having viral infection
    • Keep yourself healthy
    • Eat healthy
    • Drink lots of water
    • Have enough sleep

  4. For some with asthma, the cold weather can trigger asthma attacks, due to the dryness of cold air and cold builds mucus on the lungs.


    Symptoms

    • Shortness of breath
    • Wheezing sound while breathing
    • Dry cough
    • Pain and tightness in the chest

    Prevention

    • Drink lots of water to hydrate during the cold weather
    • Clean the house for allergens that could trigger your asthma
    • Carry your inhaler anywhere
    • Wear masks to lessen the allergens you may inhale

With the current situation we are experiencing, it is best to keep ourselves safe from any illnesses and diseases we may acquire not only for ourselves but most importantly for our family and loved ones. As the saying goes “Health is Wealth” we should always put our health and our family’s health a priority by taking care of our body thru healthy food and exercising.
